Separation of Church and State - A new Vox group invite.

Comments

Is there a group watching the American Progressive Left and their agenda of eradicating religion from American public life? I agree that Church and State should remain separate along the lines of the Founder's original intent -- to protect religion from government. I have very little use for the Religious Right as well, mostly because political demigods (who identify themselves as "ministers") have subverted portions of different Christian denominations for their own political agendas. Would i find a place here, or is this group just another political ideology fueled by the black/white moral absolutism and the typical anti-intellectualism of small minded men like Dawkins and Hitchens?
You are defintely welcome here.

I am not for the eradication for religion. One of my first posts (when I joined) may have indicated that was my intention but I was a new convert from Christian to atheist and new converts can always be a bit over zealous :)

In recent times I have moved away from the likes of Hitchens and even Harris as they seem to be just as fanatical about eradicating religion, as the "Right" is about enforcing religion and I am against all types of extremism. I believe there is a place for religion and our culture would be lacking without it.

The links I have included draw on people of all faiths and those who are not of faith. This group is all about the right to practice or not to practice religion.

That should read: I am not for the eradication of religion.

I believe there are such groups, you just have to look in the "Right" places.

I would hope this group would be a more middle approach which was in keeping with the ideals of the founding fathers. So hopefully this will be a rational group which also has the ability to address the extreme end of the Progressive Left.

Exacly where do you find this "seperation of church" that is not based on a court ruling??????
The exact phrase itself is to be found in the writing of Thomas Jefferson, but the principle is to also be found in the establishment clause of the first amendment.
The term "Seperation of Church and State" really was coined in the 60s, as the culture wars between the new Left and the Right began to heat up. But this is an old conflict, actually -- Madison, who was very much with Jefferson philosophically, was very much dismayed when after the Constitution was ratified, the Senate hired a Christian Chaplin, as he believed it violated the Establishment Clause... and i think he was right on the money.
Thanks Sheri and Christianity in the Raw for answering Lightfoot's enquiry.
